12 - Love That Shows Up In Ordinary Acts
A memory came up on my Facebook page today. It was a post I made in 2020 that gave a shoutout to my husband for putting together a video for me using Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects.
The post got me thinking about how in marriage, often your spouse’s ‘yes’ turns into both of your ‘yes’.
I had asked him to put together photos from a scavenger hunt into a fun video for a non-profit I was a part of. Instead of just a slideshow, I wanted something dynamic with music and effects. He sat side by side with me for hours, learning software he probably never would have touched otherwise—just because I said yes to that role.
There have been other “yes” moments in our marriage where he has come alongside to learn a new skill in order to support me in some way.
Marriage is most definitely a team effort and part of that union often comes with coming alongside your partner, in their “yeses” and their dreams.
There was a lengthy season of our marriage where my husband and I were not on the same page, in the same book, or even in the same library to have walked out the things we’ve done over the past several years. For many years, we were just surviving, truth be told.
But on the other side of so much struggle, love has grown, not in big romantic gestures but in small, ordinary acts. A “yes” to assisting in whatever endeavour I'm engaged with even when he was tired after a long day. A soft answer when he could have been angry. A walk at the end of the day to connect. Sacrificial acts. Learning to engage and care for my heart.
The seeds of seemingly ordinary actions, grow roots that blossom more beauty over time than what we could ever imagine.
Neither of us has done it all perfectly, but God has been perfect through it all. We haven’t lived a story book romance. But the author of love has taken those two books that were in different libraries and brought them together to reveal a love story only He could pen together.
