15 - The Layer You Can't Skip In Marketing
Marketing is like a layered cake. Whether you’re launching a business or non-profit - or frankly, an idea into the world, marketing is one layer you have to learn to bake.
If we don’t know the recipe for marketing our business, the cake can come out a little messy. It’s not that it’s not still edible, but it’s not the best it can possibly be.
Marketing isn’t just your website, your social media content, or your business cards - those layers are further up the tier of the cake.
One of the base layers is having a healthy mindset as you begin.
Learning to get past disappointment before you start and how you choose to address obstacles when they arise are part of that base layer.
When I built , ‘It’s Time to Dream Again Journal’ I started with disappointment and recovery for a reason - I went there first because if you don’t get the base of the cake right, everything added later, although great ingredients, will get lost in the batter.
Getting this right early will you keep the batter clean, no grit, no lumps, while you’re ‘baking’ (marketing).
When you get that first initial spark for an idea, your mind rushes to the finish line naturally. You envision yourself at the end of the journey with the product launched, the organization built, and all the fun ways you will serve your community with what God has given you to walk out.
Dreaming is such a fun part of the process!
But as we dream and work towards that end goal, I would encourage you to think about that base layer of your marketing cake.
Think about it as Pre-Dream work.
Here are some questions to ask yourself before you ever start marketing your “thing”.
Do you have any past disappointments to release?
How can you re-write the narrative of the past times you’ve dreamed and it didn’t work out?
What negative voices do you need to lay down as you work?
These questions are foundational! There are so many more questions to answer of course, but these are a few to get you started!
